Text-Based Games: The Role-Playing Stereotypes

[ad_1]

I found when I was much younger it was quite easy to get involved in games like Dungeons and Dragons where your character has a background that you create and they are as customisable as you want to make them. I also found it extremely easy to get into a roleplaying stereotype.

One day I spent a lot of time going through people's text game backgrounds and histories and found the most common ones to date (remember that not a lot of people stick to a roleplay they originally set for their character.) They are:

Abandoned by Mother / Father

This classic roleplay type plays on the story that they were abandoned by a member of their family. This is not to say that only their mother / father would be the one abandoning, but they are the most common. Father had to go to war and never came back, whilst the mother turned to the streets to feed all the hungry mouths and just one day never returned. This makes perfect roleplay for a typical loner, do-not-trust-anyone character type. If you're okay not having a lot of friends and roleplaying the lone ranger in a text game, it is quite a good choice.

Remember that this character has abandonment issues. They feel like everyone around them in the MUD is setting them up for the ultimate let down. Your character will likely get emotional easy and often overreact to someone being gone for even the shortest period of time.

Betrayed by a Lover / Friend

This roleplay personality comes from any typical Romance novel you have read where the heroine / hero must rise above his mistrust in the opposite sex. Either they had a relationship go sour or they were dropped off in the middle of nowhere with no shoes to walk home on, or they were left to foot a bill they did not have the cash for. Either way, this type is quite an easy role to sit into when roleplaying.

Your character will probably be weary of everyone. in the text game Your character tends to get emotional quickly, but anger is their tool of choice. This is a good character type to pick up if you have played a lot of JRPGs, as this tends to be common.

The Lone Ranger

This roleplay personality delves from all of the old Wild West films. This character is the bad boy in all respects, tends to scoff at the law and generally woos women and / or men quite easily! They give off this aura of naughtiness that most people want to make the attempt to 'tame' them. It's an easy character to pull off in a text game if you do not want to roleplay at someone, but you want people to come to you. This, however, comes with its' own obvious challenges.

Remember that your character often does not ask for things, he tells. Your character will roll into town on either a steed or his own worn out leather boots and pick apart the other people surrounding him in the text game with a quick wit and honest tongue. Most thieves will play this part, because they do not take any nonsense from anyone and could care less about making friends.

The Misunderstood Soft-Hearted Shmuck

This character is often played by a lot of younger kids who come into the text game roleplaying environment a little green. They do not want to step on the toes of any individuals but they do want to try to roleplay something, even if it means they tend to annoy everyone else in the text game more than anything. This character tends to be overly forgiving and not really one with a backbone.

In order to roleplay this character you need to really turn off your trigger switch for angry / happy. You need to generally throw yourself into everyone's conversations without needing context and have the innate ability to answer any question asked even if it is not directed at you.

The best thing to do when roleplaying in a text game is to generally avoid the stereotypes. Try to create your own roleplay and make your character as if he is a living, breathing entity – not a familiar tale borrowed from somewhere else. Perhaps do a T-chart of what his / her likes or dislikes are.

Also remember that your character should always be separate from you so that you can really have fun with events and people. Just because your favourite colour is blue does not mean your character's favourite colour has to be blue. Really work with things that are given to you and be sure to try and remember everything that happens!

Here are a few examples I have of how to create your character while you're playing in the text game!

Keep a journal of everything that happens. This is the easiest way to remember names while you are getting started in the roleplaying world. Did someone give you a necklace? Take note of the name.

Stick with a choice you make. I had a character that hated the colour yellow because it was her sister's favourite colour. She would not accept daffodils as presents and scorned it when a lover or someone attempted to give her yellow-coloured clothing. They had a reason for the hatred and she stuck with it!

Have reasons for why you do things. If someone tells you to do something you feel your character would not do, do not do it – even if you're friends with said person out of character. Why would a priest be friends with a necromancer? Just because you met them once and they helped you out does not mean you'll be best buddies. You need a motivation. If someone raids your city during the day, do not go hunting with them at night! It reflects poorly on your roleplaying abilities.

Refrain from giving out of character reasoning for anything. "Please give my friend back his stuff because he went to the bathroom and left his character logged in." I'm sorry, but you need to be held accountable for your actions and anything you do inside of a roleplaying world is considered in character. Man up to your mistakes and take responsibility. Do not let it happen again.

My advice in the end is to make a character as if they are a real person. Yes, people change but it will take a drastic event to cause someone to go from truly evil to truly good. Always have a reason for why you are doing things with your character, even if you will never tell anyone this reason. Every character needs a motivation! Choose yours and stick with it!

Video Game Technology: The Evolution

[ad_1]

The video game industry has become a stronghold, not even a crippling economy can bring down. At $ 64 billion in sales a year you have to go else where to find an effect of the economy today. Video games have evolved from a fad to a beast that has made war with other hobbies and entertainment to become a necessity in everyday life. Politics and other technologies have made war, but none has slain this dragon. Since the shaky unpredictable beginning of the first commercial home system to this mammoth transforming technology; many products have come and gone over the span of 40 years. But what is the fascination?

Spawning from the missile defense systems of the 1940's the first interactive video game was produced in 1952 called OXO. Using a light pen it was similar to Tic-Tac-Toe. University mainframes were being used in the beginning and most games were invented by individuals as a hobby which meant that production was minimal and the games were forgotten. Almost simultaneously the arcade system and home console were released and they introduced the use of joysticks. In 1971 the Galaxy Game was installed at a student union at Stanford University and expanded to eight arcade games in 1972. Then eventually color arcade systems were introduced in 1979 and these games became commercialized. 1972 The Magnavox Odyssey home system was released in the US, which used cartridges (later becomes programmable) that used jumpers which enabled / disabled various switches inside the unit, altering the circuit logic so multiple games could be played on the same system. 1976 games were programmed on chips and inserted in plastic cartridges. Now instead of having games programmed in systems there could be a library of games.

Thriving for the most innovated technology and having the most popular games all while still making a profit was an act that would prove to be hard to juggle. In 1977 Atari 2600 (which started what is known as the second generation consoles) was released by Atari and during the holiday season the company released nine games which helped fuel the systems popularity. By 1980 Mattel released Intellivision with it's superior graphics this started the cutthroat business of video games. 1982 ColecoVision was brought into this boiling pot of competition of this new trend. While store shelves where filled with these choices the industry had it's second crash in 1983 because of the lack of consumer knowledge and too many choices. Many consoles would come and go.

In Japan a comeback was on the rise by video game companies. 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released bundled with Super Mario Brothers. With a redesigned controller that used a D-Pad and a couple of buttons NES was the foundation for future consoles. NES had a ten year reign but games demanding more processing power for graphics, game play, and saving space the fight for supremacy raged on. During the reign of NES many factors and inventions gave hope and nervousness to gamers and developers. While the internet gave way to multiplayer online games the home consoles companies were researching the latest components for their systems. In the early 1990's Sega Genesis was released and slowly took hold of markets, but eventually made an impact. The rise of categorizing games as genres, because of bigger libraries of games and 3D graphics, made courts step in and contend the content being distributed by these companies. Their complaint "games were too violent and looked too real". Little did the courts know their last comment is what were making gamers hungrier for every release. New laws by putting an age limit on who could buy violent games defused that fight, but that was not the last war the video game industry would face. 1991 Nintendo released the Super NES and Sega's argument against it, even though they both were 16-bit systems, was that Super NES was too slow. So, the formula for consoles became great graphics, processing, and game play.

Being portable was another question raised by the industry which gave birth to handheld systems. In 1980 handheld LCD's came out, but not until 1989 when Nintendo launched Game Boy then portable handhelds took hold. While Sega and Nintendo were in a struggle of power PlayStation made it's debut in the console market in 1995. PlayStation launched with the use of cd's instead of cartridges which became another milestone and basic for the industry, but PlayStation still did not have support in some markets and game companies until they realised cd's held more data and were cheaper to make. This would lead to counter act with their own cd consoles. Nintendo 64 was a success, but still using cartridges the cost pushed game companies away, and Nintendo started losing game titles. Nintendo came up with GameCube a cd based system, but lack of adult oriented games and small library it was not as popular as PlayStation. Sega released Dreamcast in 1998 with a built-in modem for online play which pioneered online gaming with consoles, but failed.

PlayStation released PS2 in 1998 though with the feeling of not having a significant competitor a comment was made that would change and propel the evolution of the video game technology. "Video game systems are the next computers" helped merge the computer and video game consoles yet keep them separate. Feeling Microsoft threatened's CEO Bill Gates, who is one of the richest men in the world, would branch out from his Windows software to produce Xbox in late 2001. His goal was to be the best gaming system and would not stop at any means. He had the finances to research and develop. Bill used his PC technology such as Intel Processors and hard drives, and put it to use in the Xbox even though it was a loss for Microsoft, but that would secure his Windows brand. With Xbox's graphics, hit game titles, and online gaming through the console having so much money invested in them the other companies did not have the funds threatening computers anymore. Feeling dominated in the home systems Nintendo and PlayStation focused on there handhelds. Each had their own unique technology to keep them floating and evenly matched. Nintendo DS prospered with there touch screen while PSP sold on multi use. PSP had such high graphics that you could watch movies and play games. Even though handhelds did not rise above consoles there are still markets where they thrive because of there portability. Microsoft released Xbox 360 in November 2005 while PS3 hit the selves soon after. Both setting the technology standard for systems, both featured high-definition graphics, large hard drive-based secondary storage, integrated networking, and a companion on-line gameplay and sales platform. PS3 debuted higher in cost because of Blu-ray and Wi-Fi technology.

Nintendo came back with force by introducing the Wii late 2006 because of the motion controller's even though critics thought it would fail. It also was lower in specifications, but another innovative invention kept Nintendo in the game. The auto and cell phone industry was invaded by the video games expansion. Cars went from having systems custom built in to standard out of factory. Cell phone went from having pre loaded games to being able to download from online which took a chunk of support from the handheld business. Even with these new toys the public was left in shock because of Nintendo Wii's player interaction, but Xbox and PS 3's online multiplayer action still had a great hold. While PlayStation tried to reinvent the wheel with their own motion controller PlayStation Move in 2010. Microsoft went with a knock out blow by releasing Kinect for Xbox 360. Kinect is a motion sensor technology that uses no controllers. These motion systems have spread the interest from teenagers and young adults to the elderly who can not physically participate in sports, The genres now include sport fitness for those that can not afford gym membership, senior centers and community centers. It looks too early to tell how Microsoft effective and PlayStation can be against Nintendo seeing we are only in the 3rd round in a 12 round 3 way fight. January 2011 will show who reigns supreme when the sales from the holidays are calculated.

It seems as this industry evolves that science-fiction novels our grandparents read are coming to life. Just like how human cloning and space travel was imagined but was not realized until decades later, I wonder if and when warp zones or molecular separation are introduced who will discover it. Is a worm hole going to transport gamers in the future when they are challenged to a virtual reality fight? One thing is certain and that is people understand the products out there and the games that they support. It wont be a consumer issue causing the next video game industry scare. The technology that is continually changing has peeked the interest of millions.

Is MMO Feeding Bullying?

[ad_1]

Bullying. A word that many of us know in a physical or psychological way, and even if this humiliating practice has existed since man rules over man today is seen literally everywhere, even home. A few years ago appeared the MMO. How is it related to bullying?

MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online, a game concept that changed the world forever. High Broadband Internet speeds gave birth to a universe of possibilities to gamers and game developers. What do you see in Internet as the most successful business? Let me get that for you, besides adult entertainment, there are two fat fish in the pond: Online Games & Social Networks. Now imagine, what will happen when you get access to both? Even when social networks have their own gaming concept, there are games that demand much more social involvement from the user.

Games that create a whole universe of fantasy and fiction are the favorite now, these games make you feel in another place, where you can be anything you want to as it is private, and nobody can see your face or know your name. It sounds good. To be honest, playing these games actually can help develop social skills. But there is always a downside, is not it?

In some particular cases bullying stopped and people moved on, but not in others. Many players are victims of cruel torture in a psychological way. No, I am not exaggerating, to many players this kind of games feels even realer than life, the game becomes their life, and they feel through the game. This happens with players of all ages, but increases as the players age become younger, especially when they spend a lot of time playing. We are not addressing to whether they should take the game that seriously or not. The main subject here is how MMO can be related to bullying.

Many games are designed to encourage Player vs. Player action, so to lose a fight is common in a game like these. Unfortunately, there are no safeties in many situations as players are not observed by Game Master's or Administrators all the time, this way they can be the target of verbal aggression and / or PK abuse. PK stands for Player Kill, a common term in this games, the abuse occurs when their character gets killed time after time by a stronger player. Dying in these games is often penalized to increase the game difficulty. Because of this when players are being killed time after time, they end up losing points, fame, equipment or whatever hard-work earned in-game valuables. The worst part is that they lose pride as a person. I have seen soaked in tears some players that I personally know as they can not play what they like without living hell. To many players it feels just like that.

It is a game after all we know, but sports and many other activities are also real, and bullying also exists there. These closed MMO environments where nobody is looking, and nobody see your face, can encourage this kind of behavior. So yes, MMO is encouraging bullying; the players that learn how to intimidate inside the game they tend to do it later in real life with other persons. What is worse; they start to lose sight of the boundaries that tell you what just a joke is, and what cruelty is. Their reality becomes "intoxicated" or "contaminated" by the moral standards they show in-game.

Like I said, there are good things to be learned and exercised in these games, but in my opinion MMO encourages bullying only because bullying exists outside in the real world. Because fo this parents need to be aware of what their children play, even if they are in their teens they have to watch their behavior online, it is very possible that they show the same one with other persons outside the virtual world.

MMO games exist because people like them. If bullying keeps rising, then the joy to play these games, and also real world games can be lost. Bullying is something that needs to be corrected yes, but do not forget that there are many places and circumstances where it exists, and now there is a new virtual universe with millions of users, where also real people are victim to this kind of humiliation .

Another issue also is how much time players spend inside these games, I will see to this subject on a later review.

Regards to everyone.

Online Sweepstakes And What Their True Purpose Is

[ad_1]

There is a promotion tool that many promoters use to promote their products or services. It is called an online sweepstakes. In order to participate an individual needs to comply with any rules that have been posted on the web page that is connected to the contest and then fill out the entry form. Then all that one can do is wait and hope they are chosen as a winner.

Many of the games for money and prizes can be entered with no fee charged. That is quite unlike those contests that have a requirement for an individual to mail in their entry. Thus even without an entry fee there is still the need for things such as stamps for postage, envelopes, writing paper, and many postcards.

These online contests for material prizes or games for cash may have a requirement of a trial of whatever goods or services that are being promoted in order to enter. This is how a sponsor of such an interesting activity will realize a profit. Further profits are garnered in the event the one that has sampled what is being offered acts to acquire a bit more of it.

One other little snag that a person may run into is that there may be a couple of additional requirements that one has to comply with in order to be eligible to participate. This can be things like the writing of a short essay, the answers to trivia questions on a certain subject, or a photograph that has been composed according to certain specifications.

It is not terribly difficult to find a site that is sponsoring a sweepstakes and online games for money. All that is needed is a sharp eye to spot an advertisement for one while browsing the internet or to enter a key word into a search engine and wait for the results.

Enticing people to try out a product is the major goal of a promoter who uses an online sweepstakes. It lures them in through the offer of a chance to win a fabulous prize that very would say that they did not want. Hopefully through all of this one should not forget the fact that another important purpose one of these contests has is for those that choose to enter to have a bit of fun.

Top Warhammer Guide – Warhammer Online Scavenging Strategy & Leveling Guides

[ad_1]

One can see that the creators of WAR strove to be diverse when they conceived of the game's characters, quests, careers, sceneries, and other elements. They also made sure that the game, hailed as the best MMO of 2008, will introduce something new to the world of online gaming, such as the inclusion of four gathering skills which are rarely seen in other MMORPGs. The gathering skills they created for the game are not only exciting and fun to use, but also easy to learn. Judging by the success of this new MMORPG, their gamble to introduce something new paid off. Not only are new gamers now addicted to this game, veterans are easily drawn to it to. One of the gathering skills will be my topic for today and is taught at the warhammer online scavenging strategy & leveling guides. Mastering this skill early on is a very smart move because this skill allows you to gain many items that might be useful in the future. Before we go into details with that, let us first analyze what this involves and how it is done.

They are really a very easy skill to learn. As usual, you need to learn the skill from a trainer early on in the game. Once you've done that, all you need to do is battle humanoid creatures and kill them. Once you've killed them, you just need to check the corpse to see if there's anything there that you can use. Simple, right? However, what you need to remember is that it only works for humanoid creatures, not beasts or animals. If you're wondering what humanoids are, they are those that resemble anything remotely human. To let you know that you can raid a certain corpse, flies will be buzzing above it. At the same time, when you point the cursor to the corpse, a pair of pliers will appear. This means that you can now go ahead and cut and snap off anything that you can use from the corpse.

The items that you get or yield from using the WAR scavenging guides vary from corpse to corpse. You should also need to remember that the higher the level of the being that you kill, the higher the item's level would be. So if you're feeling rather confident, then by all means battle with stronger creatures so you can get kickass items. These items can be kept for future use. Scavenged items can be used in multiple ways. They can be used in potion making via the Apothecary craft, as equipment for use with the cultivating skill (watering cans, for example), or fragments which can be used when making talismans via the Talisman making craft. Learning the warhammer online scavenging strategy and leveling guides is essential to players who want to have as many back up items as possible. You'll never know when you'll need an extra healing potion or two.

3 Elder Scrolls Online Sorcerer Builds

[ad_1]

Like all ESO classes, Sorcerers are extremely flexible. There is a wide range of options for players wanting to create a Sorcerer, from summoner to combat mage and more. Players who are used to traditional MMO mage classes have the option of ignoring stamina and weapons skills and playing a Sorcerer as a pure storm mages. Players who want to create something different have a broad field of options to experiment with. Here are three possible builds to help you decide what kind of Sorcerer you want to play.

Summoners / Combat Control

Combat control is not a play style that gets talked about much anymore. In many MMO groups a good tank and healer can work together to make combat control unnecessary. At the same time, a good combat controller can make a huge difference in the battle and allow the healer and tank to focus on their primary responsibilities. The Sorcerer's mix of summoning skills combined with debuffs make it a powerful combat controller.

Summoners / Combat controllers will need enough weapon skill to take down the weakened enemy or two that gets in their way, but mostly they need Magicka and their storm spirits.

Combat Mages

There are fighters, there are mages, and then there are Sorcerers. With magic reinforcing their attacks, combat mages wade through their enemies, hurling lighting and lopping off heads. With Storm Autarchs as back up and a delight in battle, Combat Mages are definitely not your typical MMO mage-type.

Elder Scrolls online Sorcerer builds for combat mages usually do heavy DPS. Tanking variations are totally possible. The need to balance Magicka and Stamina can be a challenge – especially while keeping Health from being a complete dump stat. Still, a combat mage will typically do well in both solo and group play.

Lightning Rod

Sorcerer's skills are divided into DPS, combat control, and defense. By combining combat control and defense skills, you can create a tanking Sorcerer who draws all the enemies to him so his friends can wipe them out. A Lightning Rod Sorcerer forges to the middle of the battle and uses traps, AoE, and defensive skills to keep the enemies coming.

Unlike the combat mage, a Lightning Rod has heavy Magicka and enough Health to stay alive. Stamina is helpful but not really necessary. In a group they shape the battle around themselves. Solo play can be more challenging, but a well built Lightning Rod can manage most quests without too much trouble.

Obviously these are only general descriptions of some Elder Scrolls online Sorcerer builds. the huge ranges of options available means there are easily dozens of variation on each of these builds, and several other build types as well. When building a Sorcerer be careful not to overspecialize – it is very easy for them to turn into a classic mage-type "squishy" character. Whatever you do, enjoy the power of having a storm at your finger tips. Sorcerers are an amazing class to play.

Enhance Your Memory Power With The Mahjong Game

[ad_1]

Everyone loves puzzle games and brainteasers. Sometimes they make us feel like complete idiots, which make them all the more interesting. Mahjong is one such brainteaser game, which is quite popular in China. They have been enjoying the game for several decades now. It has now grown in popularity all across the world, and has also been released in many new versions. It is liked both by children and adults alike.

The game requires quick calculation skills, sharp memory power, and smart guesswork. Even if you are good at the game, you will still require some amount of luck to win it consistently. This is because you will be drawing blind tiles, over which you will have no control. You will not know the tiles until you pick them up when your turn comes.

Also, you will need to remember the type of tiles that are discarded by other players. By doing so, you could roughly guess the type of tiles that they have with them. Even while discarding your unwanted tiles, you will need to smartly release the ones that your next opponent will not take. To do that, you will need to remember the tiles that they discarded in the previous rounds. Then the person will have no choice but to draw a tile blindly from the wall in the middle. The idea is to make the game tougher for your opponents.

Ideally the game is played by four players, but even 3 or 5 people can indulge in this engrossing activity. Mahjong can be very addictive, and it will keep you so occupied that you will simply not realize it as the time passes by.

Mahjong can also be played online as well, and you can try your gaming skills will good players from anywhere across the world. All you will need to do is register for an account at any of the good gaming websites. While some websites allow you to play for free, other might charge you with a nominal fee. Some websites might offer a free account for a trial period. If you like the features offered by them, then you could think of going for a paid account.

Mahjong games are available in a variety of types nowadays, and the each one of them is quite different and unique from others. You also get few Mahjong game versions for free on Microsoft Windows 7. Just click on start button, and then choose the games button. In the games list, you will find the Mahjong game. Is Online Poker Better Than Live Poker?

[ad_1]

This topic has been the centre of attention in many heated arguments. With online poker being a relatively new concept, many of the 'old school' poker players state that it has lost the true essence of what poker is about. There is no 'correct' answer to this question, only points of view – and throughout this article benefits of online and live poker will be discussed.

Live poker has been around since 1829, and Texas Hold'em has become the most popular card game in the world. Most casinos boast a poker table, with tournaments and cash games being held regularly.

The rush from bluffing / winning a hand in live poker is unparalleled.

Anyone who's serious about playing poker has seen some televised tournaments. The look of relief on a players face when a bluff is pulled off, or the grimace of a player who's been caught bluffing is true emotion. With a full 10 manned table, pulling off the unthinkable and showing your opponent your hand give a feeling of satisfaction that can not be described in words.

Social bonds can be made with regular players .

If you play poker at a casino reasonably frequently, you will start to make bonds with other players. There are a lot of good people who play poke – and a lot of good friends to be made. There are however a few people that will take liberties, it is recommended that you never lend money to someone at a casino.

Gets players out of the house.

This is mainly a benefit for older players, or players with families. If your daily routine is becoming monotonous, then a couple of hours break down the casino could really help. Overhead costs are much less, meaning your cost to play is reduced.

Casinos have so many outgoings, not just the cost of the property, but electricity, staff costs, security etc. Online poker does also have outgoing, but they are vastly reduced, which means some of the cost cutting can be returned to the player. Online poker cash game rake and tournament buy in fees can be up to 50% cheaper than at live casinos.
